Prerequisites

Admission to the Postgraduate Diploma Programme in Technical Conservation Studies is competitive.

    The requirements for admission and criteria for selection are the following:

    • A Bachelor's degree - preference being given to B.Sc or BEng (if including Chemistry at least on first year level).

    • Alternatively, on the basis of accredited prior learning. Only a single seat awarded one this basis, annually. (View Student Admissions Policy for RPL candidates for more information on the recognition of prior learning - RPL.)
    • Except for admission on the basis of recognised prior learning (RPL), experience as an objects conservator is not a requirement, although recommended.

    • A pass in mathematics and chemistry at senior certificate or equivalent level is highly recommended.

    • In the absence of an accredited pass in maths and chemistry, such applicants must pass a maths and chemistry admissions test after completion of an accredited course for this purposes. Candidates lacking a suitable grounding (such as applicants from the Humanities) will be required to register for the Institute's 4-month, distance study programme "Bridging to Chemistry for Conservation" during the year preceding.

    Specific admissions criteria: In addition to the requirements stated above, the following admissions criteria will apply:

    • Good proficiency in English. Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not recently studied at least one complete year at a post secondary institution where English is the official language of instruction, may be required to pass an English language proficiency test.

    • Good dimensional perception, visual acuity and fine motor skills.
