When the inaugural Paper Conservation Certificate Course flights at the central campus on 8th to 19th November 2010, this maiden course will therefore represent the culmination of three years of development. This 10-day course is positioned at introductory level, and enrolment prerequisites will not apply. Natural candidates for enrolment include curatorial personnel, novices considering private practice, as well as conservators from other specialisms.
This specialist conservation training programme succeeds at reconciling a highly developed, state of the art conservation curriculum with the practicalities of the privately owned conservation studio or that of a small, institutionally based facility. The course content is largely practical in nature, emphasizing hands-on learning and actual treatments. Topical aspects such as examination, trials, treatment formulation, remedial conservation treatments, recording, packaging and storage all feature prominently. The curriculum also examines the fundamental nature of paper and the principal dynamics of decay, and provides the novice with a guide to forecasts and quoting. The Institute’s Blueprint Mail Order Service is also pleased to point out that its range and services now stand in full support of this new department, and that it can readily supply such tools, necessities and hard-to-find materials as are needed by the practicing paper conservator, archivist, librarian or curator..
